Why should you try Aerial Yoga?

Chances are, you’ve encountered some form of aerial fitness while scrolling on social media. The beautiful and seemingly daunting practice is actually much more accessible to get into than one would think. It’s not just something to be found on your favourite fitness influencers’ instagram story – you could sign up for a class right here in Tung chung.

Of course, we wouldn’t be urging you to try out a class without informing you of the benefits you would reap. So let’s start here: What is aerial fitness/yoga?

Instead of performing yoga poses on a mat, aerial yoga uses a silk hammock or sling that is suspended from the ceiling to perform those same movements. The hammock provides support through your yoga flow, improving flexibility and range of motion. The hammock also takes pressure off certain areas of the body like the head, shoulders and back, allowing you to reach poses like headstands with greater ease. Now let’s dive deeper into why aerial yoga would be the right choice for YOU.

1. Kiss your back pain goodbye

Most corporate jobs don’t require much movement other than sitting, standing, and repeating. Doing this routine day in and day out puts a great deal of pressure on the spine, allowing gravity to weigh it down and cause tightness and soreness.

Being suspended in the air, upside down or in various other joint-pressure-alleviating positions can help with decompression, leading to an almost instant relief in spinal or joint pain. Compared to other yoga disciplines such as yin yoga (which we also offer!), aerial is more beneficial to individuals who experience joint pain  in the sense that it provides the action of pulling, which is highly beneficial to tight or compressed joints.

2. Deep breaths that come easy

Deep and controlled breathing is a big part of any yoga discipline, but the in-air suspension of aerial yoga allows one to completely relax and comfortably maintain every pose – allowing you to fully focus on taking deep breaths. Over time, you may even notice a vast improvement in your general lung capacity. No more huffing and puffing on the third flight of stairs!

3. Genuinely hit your fitness goals

Aerial yoga is much more than pretty poses and silky hammocks. It requires some real skill and strength. The balance, core and arm strength, and stability it takes to hold certain poses will have you building strength in your entire body. In fact, a study performed by the “American Council on Exercise” shows that during a 50-minute aerial yoga session, you have the potential to melt away 320 calories. This greatly decreases your risk of developing cardiovascular issues, and will have you feeling great in general.

We believe that everyone, both kids and adults, can truly benefit from the results of consistently attending an aerial yoga session. Here at Fitness In Motion, we’re determined to make practices like aerial easily accessible to all tung chung/ lantau residents. If you’ve made it this far, we assume we’ve piqued your interest! If that’s the case – don’t hesitate to contact us and we’ll get you set up.
